Leafsnap App Reviews

Ridiculous

I guess I have to give it a star, but this app is total bulshit.

Nice learning app

Once I got over the fact that this app wasnt perfect and that the photo tool never really worked, I realized the utility of it. Taking walks around the neighborhood and parks, Leafsnap helped to familiarize me with my local trees. It would be nice to be able to "collect" the data for tees youve identified in a list, or otherwise flag then somehow. And if the image match for the photos got better, that would be wonderful. But for now, Im perfectly happy that Im much more knowledgeable about trees than I was just 6 months ago.

A wealth of data in this app!

Surprised to see so many bad reviews. This app worked perfect for me and has so much organized data and photo types as well as bark pics and more. The team who put this together provided a huge amount of value to the world and community. Well done!

Doesnt work

This is my 3rd attempt at giving an honest, constructive criticism, really want this app to be as advertised review. Been kicked off twice now. Silly stuff. Duplicate nickname both times. Im not a hater. For my JOB alone-Id LOVE this to work. But it is not, UNDERSTAND, not set up for ALL areas. If you dont live in Washington State, the Pacific Northwest Canada or somewhere NOT rural or un-North, Un-West....this app is a waste of your time. So, so so wanted it to be fo real.

Lost collection data

Nice app. Identification from pics works well. Lost all data in collection when pics were deleted from photos.

I rarely have a white background

I wanted to use this app when Im out in the wild, on a hike. But the app requires you to place the leaf on a white background for identification. I suppose I could start taking paper with me on hikes, but better would be if it required a neutral background, like granite or dirt. That is, be less fussy, so long as you can distinguish the lead from its background.

Worst waste of time

This app is the biggest pile of manure. I tried over 15 times with 15 different types of plants and it gave a recognition error on everyone. Doesnt waste your time even downloading this pile of crap. I wish I could give it 0 stars

Leafsnap

Great idea! App is a little buggy, but overall has potential. Very educational. I could not get the photo tool to work, but I did enjoy taking the quizzes to see just how little I know about the plants/tree right outside my door. Hope the people behind the scenes get all the kinks worked out!

Love the concept; wish it worked

First of all, thank you for this app. I LOVE this concept, but the app has just never worked for me. Starting with just trying to take the photo, it almost always has a problem with my background not being white enough. If I can get past that, it usually doesnt upload and I get an error message. If I can get past that, it usually doesnt see the leaf shape properly and provides me with matches that are nothing like the leaf I submitted. I imagine part of my problem is that Im in San Diego and probably our native species arent in the database yet. Im going to wait for the developers to make their way out to the west coast, but Ill keep checking in.

HORRIBLE

I use a pure white background and the freaking app says put on a white background its results are also not accurate

Very limited species list

Too many non native species. Limited geographic area.

Missing common houseplants

I tested it against an echeveria hookeri and it failed to identify the plant.

Doesnt work

I do as instructed & place the leaf on a solid white background and it keeps giving an error message. I tried many times w many different leaves. Disappointing. Deleted.

No poisonous plants?

I looked for poison ivy, no listing. Looked for other poisonous plants, found nothing. I was hoping to use this app as a fun sort of survival tool, guess not.

Never worked.

Placed flower in white paper over white paper and was told there wasnt a white background. Tried 6 times and quit.

Cool App!

Yes, Ive had trouble using the photo feature, but who cares? Whats really cool is that you can get a leaf and compare it to all the pictures, and if youre stumped you can try to find the fruit and, if its spring, flowers. Its more effort then others were expecting, but it helps you learn the trees and what they look like. Just today I identified what I think is a American Sycamore, Bur Oak, Scottish Elm and A Northern Catalpa! Thanks Columbia University!

Useless

I agree. Totally useless. It couldnt identify a simple hosts or coleus. Deleted immediately.

Useless

I got the app for its "snap it" function, to identify trees I couldnt identify through field guides. It has never worked. I get the server error every time, day or night.

Not Bad

I tried it on a perfect American Sycamore leaf collected from a specimen just a bit outside the normal range. The app doesnt like any image unless the leaf is on a pure white background. On a piece of unlined white paper I took four images in succession. Their server did an okay job and returned the right answer at positions 2,3,4, and 2. (First was Amur Maple.) But the returned reference images made it really clear that my leaf was a Sycamore.

I love this app!

Ive used this apps image recognition feature successfully on a number of leaves. The correct tree is generally in the top three or so choices offered up by the app. The images in the provided catalog are clear and easy to use for manual identification and to narrow down the choices offered by the auto recognition feature. There are a number of other great features as well! Great job folks!
