Leafsnap App Reviews

Doesnt Work :-(

Such a nice concept but this app has NEVER worked for me. The first time I downloaded this app (3 yrs ago?) I was working with a rather old iPhone so I thought for sure this must be the problem.. but now I have a brand new, up to date, all the bells and whistles iPhone and this app cant even identify a common tomato plant or a common leaf from a tree that grows everywhere! I live in WA state which is known as the evergreen state, I was sooo hoping this app would finally work :-( Error messages is all I receive. Sorry Dev(s) its time for me to delete.

Doesnt work -- but free

Great idea. Hardly ever works. Pics require a white background, and even then often fail to upload to the Leafsnap server. Upgraded to two stars because the price is right, at least.

Quite possibly the worst App ever made

Great idea. Just down at work. Like at all. I rarely review apps, unless that are terrific or in this case, so terrible as to astound. The technology clearly does not exist for this app to work. Tried a maple leaf 25 time, and it said it was an unidentified species. Please spare Yourself the frustration and go to the Library and check out a book on the subject instead.

Great Tree ID app

Works great! I dont understand the bad reviews. Just use a white background and it works great! Awesome!

Worked on 2 leaves, then nothing

When I first downloaded the software, I took it outside and shot two leaves. One was a Cherry Plum and the other was a fig. Both of those leaves showed up in the results list. About half an hour later, I used the Leafsnap on an oak and something else. I got the error message that everyone else here is complaining about. I may delete the app and then re-upload it later. Maybe it doesnt like iPhones. Or I may forget about it altogether and get on with my life!

Doesnt Work

Do not waste your weekend in this app. It is not accurate at all. Tested it on a tree with the tag with its name on it and the tree that it was was not even an option.

Junk

This app is a huge waste of time I can take a picture of a round leaf and it will come back with one round leaf and ten that are anything but round. It has never worked and is so worthless

Horrible identifications

I took two different pictures of leafs of very well known trees in my area. Neither came up in the search results. The results had trees that werent even native to my area. Very poor algorithm for identification.

Error

Kept on receiving error message after taking photo. Maybe the app works for someone else.

Not Enough Species

Great idea, works very well but there arent enough species for the app to be useful across regions of the US. Its very useful within the Mid East coast where the apps creators are but outside that area-like in the Midwest-its missing too many species.

Great for amateur botanists

This app is incredibly detailed and useful for learning basic plant morphology and identification. I cant speak for the photo recognition software though, as I have not used it. I think the fun is identifying the plants myself!

Useless

For what this app promises, it delivers virtually nothing. Dont plan on using it in the field because it is very finicky about a true white background. Then be ready to browse through choices of possible trees including oaks and maples when you shoot a beech tree leaf.

Edible

I want it to tell you which ones are edible.

Worked great for me!

Downloaded app today, grabbed leaf off tree and snapped picture. It accepted photo first try, and it didnt take long to give me a list of potential trees. The leaf looked like the third one on list, so I looked deeper and happy to see the same flowers that we see every spring. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I see room for growth! (Although it doesnt seem to have been updated since 2015)

Useless

This at is so disappointing. Needing a white background makes this app impractical and really difficult to use. I deleted the app instantly and downloaded a much better related app. Wish I could give zero stars.

Doesnt work well

Took the picture and several times it told me it wasnt on a white background and it was. When I finally had a photo, it was identified as a pine and I know it is in the oak family. big difference. I am deleting this app.

Disappointed

I was so excited to use this app. I guess I didnt read it carefully. I wanted to identify plants and flowers I see on walks and such. I wont tear a leaf off of a living plant to identify it, to say nothing of the white background! For me its a no go.

I believe I have identified a Japanese zelkova in tennessee

There should be a way to post where you have found a species to better update the database and see where new species have wondered off to. Just a thought

Not Practical

Works great at home. Not practical in the woods. Keeps asking to put a white background like a piece of paper. Tried on concrete road, not white enough. Defeats the purpose of being in the woods.

no longer works

I was excited to get this app to help me identify trees when I moved from the west coast to the east coast, but after uploading 3 pictures, it stopped working. after snapping a pic, the upload always fails, which is very disappointing as I had high hopes for this app!
